How Ticket Dismissal Works

One Course. One Ticket Gone.

Under Article 45.0511 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, an eligible driver can ask the court for permission to take a driving safety course. Once you finish the course and file the paperwork, the court dismisses the ticket, so it never becomes a conviction on your record.

You can use this option once every 12 months, and you usually have 90 days to finish. Doing it online means you can complete the six hours from home, the office or your phone, without taking a day off for a classroom session.

Texas Dismissal Rules at a Glance

Is Your Ticket Eligible for Dismissal?

Most common moving violations qualify, but Texas law sets a few firm limits. Check the lists below before you enroll.

Generally Eligible
  • Speeding less than 25 mph over the posted limit
  • Running a red light or stop sign
  • Improper or unsafe lane changes
  • Following too closely
  • Failure to yield or signal
Generally Not Eligible
  • Speeding 25 mph or more over the limit, or 95 mph or faster
  • Holding a commercial driver license (CDL), now or at the time of the offense
  • Passing a school bus, or leaving the scene of an accident
  • Offenses in a construction or maintenance work zone while workers were present

Always confirm eligibility with the court handling your citation before enrolling. You also cannot use a course if you completed one for dismissal in the 12 months before the offense.

The Cost of Not Acting

What Happens If You Just Pay the Fine?

Mailing in a payment feels like the easy way out, but paying the fine is a guilty plea, and the conviction can follow you for years.

20–40%

Insurance Premiums Climb

One conviction gives your insurer a reason to raise your premium, and that increase usually lasts about three years.

Record

The Conviction Stays on File

A moving-violation conviction goes on your Texas driving record, where insurers and some employers can see it.

+Fees

Court Costs Pile Up Fast

Court costs and state fees are added on top of the base fine, so the total is often well above the amount printed on your ticket.
